This is a digital download of the Haitian-Creole Glossary.
The Haitian-Creole Glossary of Legal and Related Terms is the product of considerable study, dedication, and hard work. This glossary is dedicated primarily to legal terminology and other lexical terms that occur with frequency in the judicial legal setting in cases involving Haitians. Selection was based primarily on those terms that have proven difficult to interpret into Haitian-Creole.
This glossary is written for the special purpose of providing Haitian-Creole interpreters with a comprehensible, not a comprehensive, grasp of English legal or other terms, and to provide the equivalent word or phrase in Haitian-Creole that can be used in the interpretation process. Therefore, extensive dictionary definitions will not be found in this work, nor other etymological, linguistic or historical notes or comments. The equivalents included in this reference are those that are most meaningful and understandable within the Haitian-Creole linguistic world to the greatest cross-section of traditional and non-traditional speakers of Haitian-Creole.
The Haitian Creole glossary will be useful not only to federal, state and local courts, but to other agencies, educational institutions, research organizations, scholars and members of the public who have a special interest in this area. No doubt the glossary will be of great interest to scholars of Haitian-Creole and Haitian-Creole linguistics, as well as translators and interpreters in other settings because of the emphasis put on essential meaning, abbreviated to its minimal, yet comprehensible form, which is a prerequisite to its usefulness in the courts.
